Pound and franc at their highest levels in years. The złoty is weakening against the major currencies

The złoty is under pressure, while the franc and pound are getting more expensive

At the end of the week, the złoty remains weaker, and investors are shifting capital into safer assets. This is especially visible on pairs against the euro, the dollar, the franc and the pound. For people exchanging money, it simply means a more expensive purchase of foreign currencies.

EUR/PLN is up 0.47 percent and reaches 4,3970 zł. That puts the rate very close to the psychological barrier of 4,40 zł. When exchanging 1000 zł, this gives about 227 euros today, so for the same amount of złoty, buyers get less currency than at a lower rate.

USD/PLN is even higher, rising 0.62 percent to 3,9256 zł. In practice, the U.S. dollar now costs more than 2,4 groszy more than at yesterday’s close. With 5000 zł, the difference in the dollar conversion becomes noticeable, even if the move itself does not look large in percentage terms.

In the background, EUR/USD remains weaker, slipping 0.12 percent to 1,1200. That matters because a lower rate on this pair usually limits room for emerging-market currencies, including the złoty, to recover. Sentiment is also being hit by a global flight from risk, rising energy commodity prices, and social and fiscal unease in Western Europe.

The franc is rising the most today. CHF/PLN is up 0.50 percent to 4,7769 zł and is at its highest level since March 2023. At the same time, GBP/PLN stands at 5,2509 zł, keeping the pound close to multi-month highs. This level is unfavorable for people repaying foreign-currency loans and for those planning purchases abroad.
